Adolescent orthodontics – why does this moment matter?

By the teenage years, most permanent teeth are usually present and jaw development may still be ongoing. This allows the orthodontist to assess both the position of the teeth and the bite relationship, growth and conditions for treatment. However, this does not mean that every teenager should immediately receive braces.

Adolescent orthodontics takes advantage of the period of intensive development, but must take into account the young patient's everyday life: school, sports, hygiene, appearance and willingness to cooperate. Depending on the malocclusion, fixed braces, removable solutions or clear aligners are possible, but the method is selected only after diagnosis. Orthodontic treatment for adolescents in our office in Chorzów, convenient for families from Katowice, includes regular check-ups, hygiene instructions, eruption monitoring and a retention plan. The goal is not only to align the teeth evenly, but also to have a functional and possibly stable bite.

A good plan considers health, function and smile aesthetics as well as school, sport, oral-hygiene routines and the young person’s motivation. A smile may matter to a teenager’s confidence and social wellbeing, so we take these expectations seriously without promising one predetermined change. The parent helps organise treatment, while the young patient should understand its purpose and their own role in it.

When should a teenager visit an orthodontist?

It is also worth returning to the consultation if the previous assessment took place in childhood. The eruption of subsequent teeth and growth may change the situation, which is why a youth orthodontist assesses the current bite and does not base the plan solely on previous recommendations.

01 / Teeth alignment

Crowding, gaps, a tooth erupting outside the arch or no space for another permanent tooth.

02 / Occlusal relationship

Protruding front teeth, retracted or protruding lower jaw, crossbite, open or deep bite.

03 / Function and comfort

Difficulty in biting, closing the mouth freely, biting tissue or disturbing asymmetry when biting.

04 / Previous treatment

Re-alignment of teeth, ill-fitting retainer or previously interrupted orthodontic treatment.

You do not need to recognize the name of the malocclusion yourself. If the position of the teeth, the way of biting or the development of the smile are of concern, the consultation serves to determine whether treatment, further diagnostics or calm observation is needed.

What does a teenager's orthodontic consultation look like?

We talk to the young patient and the parent. We ask about health, previous treatment, comfort, expectations, sports and the possibility of regular visits. Then we assess the teeth, gums, way of biting, jaw relationship, profile, function and stage of eruption of permanent teeth.

Fixed braces or aligners for a teenager?

This is one of the most common questions, but the answer does not depend solely on age or which method is less visible. The orthodontist compares possible solutions for a specific malocclusion and explains what level of hygiene and cooperation they require.

01 / Fixed brace

It allows you to precisely control the position of teeth in many malocclusions. It may have metal or aesthetic locks, but their appearance does not replace a proper plan.

02 / clear aligners

They are removable and discreet, but require consistent wearing for a period of time determined by the orthodontist. Not every problem can be solved in the same way.

03 / Other orthodontic appliances and elements

For selected malocclusions, the plan may include removable or specialized braces, elastic tractions or other elements supporting a specific treatment goal.

Orthodontic braces and school, food and sports

Treatment should be safely incorporated into the teenager's everyday life. Before we start, we discuss not only the medical goal, but also practical situations that may determine the comfort and regularity of following the recommendations.

01 / School

The first days require adaptation. A small set with a brush, wax and a box for aligners helps ensure comfort even outside the home.

02 / Food

With fixed braces, your eating habits must be adjusted so as not to overload the brackets and archwires. The aligners are usually removed for meals as instructed.

03 / Sports

Activity is possible. For contact sports, you need a protector matched to the device and stage of treatment.

04 / Appearance and relationships

The teenager participates in choosing a possible method. Talking about aesthetics, comfort and responsibilities increases the chance for conscious cooperation.

Practical tips can be found in the articlefirst days with orthodontic braces - diet, speaking and adaptation.

Oral hygiene during a teenager’s orthodontic treatment

Before starting active treatment, your teeth and gums should be healthy and your hygiene good enough. If we see cavities or inflammation, we refer the patient to a dentist - the Orto Smile office does not provide conservative dentistry.

Fixed braces create additional places for retaining the plaque, so detailed instruction and systematic cleaning of the teeth, gum area, brackets and spaces under the arch are needed. Regular dental checkups and preventive care are still necessary during therapy. The detailed diagram is described in the guide:how to clean your teeth properly with braces.

Damage to braces, a sticking wire, increasing pain, tooth trauma, or rapidly deteriorating gum condition should be reported. Activating, bending or cutting off elements yourself may disturb the treatment and should not replace contact with the doctor's office.

What happens after the orthodontic braces are removed?

The end of active tooth movement begins the retention stage. Tissues need stabilization, and teeth may change position as they grow and over time. Therefore, when planning therapy, we explain that the retainer is not an addition, but a part of the treatment.

The type of retainer, wearing pattern and inspection dates are selected by the orthodontist. If the retainer breaks, comes off, gets lost or no longer fits, it is worth reporting it as soon as possible. On-site patient parking — less time spent organising appointments

Orthodontic care requires regular appointments, so convenient access matters. The Orto Smile clinic at 74 Katowicka Street in Chorzów has its own spacious patient car park. There is no need to search for a space nearby or use municipal parking before a consultation or review appointment.

This is especially convenient for families travelling from Chorzów, Katowice and nearby towns when an appointment must fit around school, work and other commitments. Reliable parking makes arrival easier to plan and saves time otherwise spent searching and paying for a space.

Is teenagehood a good time to get braces?

Often yes, because in many teenagers most of the permanent teeth have already erupted and jaw growth may still be ongoing. However, there is no one right age for every patient. The orthodontist assesses the type of malocclusion, stage of development, condition of teeth and gums, and the young person's readiness to cooperate. Only then can it be determined whether it is worth starting treatment now or whether observation is needed.

Which orthodontic appliance is best for a teenager?

The best method is the one that allows you to safely achieve the goal of treatment and is possible to use in everyday life. Depending on the diagnosis, you may consider fixed metal or aesthetic braces, clear aligners or another solution. aligners require very systematic wearing, while fixed braces require thorough cleaning around the brackets and wire. The choice should not be based solely on the appearance or name of the system.

Does braces interfere with school or speaking?

After inserting the braces, there may be a short adaptation period: tooth tenderness, abrasions of the mucous membrane or a temporary change in speech, especially in the case of some removable braces. Usually, a young person gradually gets used to the new situation. It is worth having a toothbrush, orthodontic wax and a box for braces or aligners. If the symptoms are severe, persist or if a part of the device hurts, please contact the office.

Can a teenager play sports with braces?

Yes, orthodontic treatment usually does not exclude physical activity. In case of contact sports, you should discuss with your orthodontist an appropriate mouthguard that protects the teeth and soft tissues and takes into account the presence of braces. The aligners are removed for contact sports and replaced with a protector if such a recommendation applies to a given discipline. After an injury to your teeth or braces, you need to contact the office.

How to care for a teenager's teeth during orthodontic treatment?

Teeth, gum areas, brackets and the space under the arch must be cleaned carefully every day according to the instructions. Braces help retain plaque, so poor hygiene increases the risk of gingivitis, caries and enamel decalcification. Regular visits to the dentist are also needed because an orthodontist does not replace a dental check-up. Deterioration of hygiene may require additional measures and sometimes temporary suspension of active treatment.

How long does orthodontic treatment for adolescents take?

It is impossible to reliably give a single time without examination and diagnostics. The type and severity of the malocclusion, planned tooth movements, stage of growth, selected method, regularity of check-ups and patient's cooperation are important. After preparing the plan, the orthodontist presents the expected course, but the body may react at an individual pace. Missing appointments, damaging your braces, or not wearing your aligners and tractions as directed may prolong your treatment.

Do I need to have my teeth cleaned before getting braces?

Yes. Before active treatment, caries and inflammation should be cured and hygiene stabilized. The Orto Smile office does not provide conservative dentistry, so if necessary, we refer a teenager to a dentist. Healthy teeth and gums are a prerequisite for safe initiation and conduct of therapy.

Does a teenager have to wear a retainer after braces are removed?

Yes, retention is an integral stage of orthodontic treatment. After braces are removed or you stop wearing aligners, your teeth need stabilization, and natural changes may also occur later. The orthodontist selects the type of retainer and the regimen of its use individually. It is worth reporting the loss, damage or mismatch of a retainer as soon as possible.

How much do orthodontic braces for a teenager cost?

The cost depends on the diagnosis, method, number of arches treated, scope of follow-up visits and retention. After the diagnosis, the parent and teenager receive an overview of the plan and expected financial stages. Current prices of basic services can be found in the orthodontic price list. The lowest price of the device itself does not show the full cost of the entire therapy.
