What is Botox
and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin temporarily limits neuromuscular conduction in a precisely selected area. In aesthetic medicine, it may be considered in cases of excessive activity of the muscles responsible for specific facial lines.

Not every wrinkle has the same cause. Therefore, the qualification includes an assessment of the patient's facial expressions, asymmetry, anatomy and expectations.

We look at the face
in motion, too.

Planning is not about marking the same points for each person. The strength and direction of muscle work, natural asymmetries, the position of the eyebrows, previous treatments and which elements of expression the patient wants to keep are important.

Naturalness does not mean lack of effect. Indicates an effect specific to a specific face.

Botox — treatment areas
and suitability assessment.

Aesthetic areas

  • the area between the eyebrows
  • forehead area
  • side area of the eyes
  • rabbit wrinkles
  • cobbled beard
  • lip flip - after qualifying

Other indications

  • excessive activity of the masseter muscles
  • excessive sweating in selected areas
  • selected elements of the lower part of the face and neck
  • the range is always determined by the doctor

How does botulinum toxin work?

The preparation affects the signal transmission between the nerve and the selected muscle. As a result, muscle activity may be temporarily limited. In aesthetic medicine, this is used, among others, when a specific line or system of tension is directly related to intense muscle work.

The effect does not appear immediately after leaving the office and is not permanent. Its development, intensity and duration are individual. The result is influenced by, among others, anatomy, muscle activity, treatment plan and the body's individual response.

Dynamic and permanent wrinkles

A line visible primarily during movement may react differently than a change also visible at rest. The toxin does not directly improve skin quality or replenish lost volume. Therefore, sometimes a different or combined plan is needed.

What treatments are most often considered?

Frown lines — between the eyebrows

Strong muscle activity in this area can create vertical lines and give the face an appearance of tension. The plan requires assessing the work of the entire upper layer of the face, not just one wrinkle.

Forehead and eyebrow area

The frontalis muscle is involved in raising the eyebrows. Too aggressive restriction of its activity may disturb the natural balance. Therefore, the dose and location of the points depend on the anatomy and muscle function.

Crow’s feet — outer eye area

The lines in this area are part of a natural smile. The goal may be to soften them rather than completely remove the expression.

Lower floor of the face

Lip flip, cobbled beard, bunny wrinkles and selected neck elements require separate qualification. These are areas with an important function, so they should not be treated as an automatic addition to the package.

How is suitability for Botox assessed?

Bring a list of medicines and details of previous toxin injections. Report allergies, an infection at the planned injection site, neuromuscular conditions and any difficulty swallowing or breathing. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Treatment may be postponed or ruled out. Do not stop taking prescribed medicines on your own.

First, we discuss the goal and health history: diseases, medications, allergies, previous procedures and reactions to them. Then Dr Małgorzata Osikowicz assesses the face at rest and when performing specific facial movements. Only on this basis is a plan created.

Before administering the preparation, the patient learns about the proposed scope, cost, possible side effects and alternatives. The procedure itself involves performing a series of precise passes to planned points. Their number is not a universal measure of the quality of the treatment.

Approach to treatment

I do not start by asking how many areas to treat. First, I assess which muscles are actually responsible for the patient's concern.

When does Botox start working and how long does it last?

For expression lines, initial changes may appear within the first week and the effect may last several months. This is a guide, not a guarantee: timing depends on the product, treatment area and individual response. The doctor determines when to review and assess the full effect; initial changes should not be mistaken for the final result.

The action develops gradually. The exact date when it is worth assessing the result, Dr Małgorzata Osikowicz will determine in accordance with the preparation and protocol used. Too early an assessment may lead to incorrect conclusions.

The holding time is not the same for everyone. At the next visit, more important than a rigid calendar is the reassessment of facial expressions and the return of muscle activity. Treatments should not be performed more frequently just because a certain date is approaching.

Botox — aftercare and possible side effects

Headache, asymmetry, drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow and unwanted muscle weakness are also possible. The risk depends on the product and injection site. Contact a doctor if these symptoms occur. Difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, or swelling of the face or throat requires immediate medical attention — call 112.

The patient receives individual recommendations for the next hours and days. There may be temporary puncture marks, tenderness, slight swelling or bruising. Less frequently, actions resulting from the preparation's influence on adjacent structures are possible.

The office should have a clearly established contact method in case of disturbing symptoms. The online list of recommendations does not replace the instructions provided after a specific procedure.

How much does Botox for one area cost?

Do Botox and hyaluronic acid work in the same way?

Botox (botulinum toxin) reduces the activity of selected muscles. A hyaluronic acid filler is used, among other things, to restore volume and shape tissues. These are different procedures; the choice depends on the cause of the concern and a medical examination.

Hyaluronic acid

Will Botox remove deep, permanent wrinkles?

Limiting muscle activity can gradually soften the line that is also visible at rest, but does not always remove it completely. With deep wrinkles, skin quality and remodeling are also important, so a realistic plan may include time, care, or another procedure rather than increasing the dose of toxin.

Are Botox and botulinum toxin the same?

"Botox" is a colloquial term for botulinum toxin treatment, derived from the name of one of the preparations. However, available products are not identical and their units should not be compared or converted independently. The doctor decides on the choice of preparation, dose and points of administration after the examination.

What wrinkles does Botox treat?

Botulinum toxin best responds to wrinkles associated with the work of facial muscles, including the lion's wrinkle, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet. Not every facial line has the same cause, so before the procedure, the doctor assesses facial expressions, eyebrow position, skin quality and proportions of the entire face.

Will the face remain still after the treatment?

The goal does not have to be to completely reduce facial expressions. The scope of action depends on the anatomy, muscle activity and the established plan.

When can the result be assessed?

Change develops gradually. The exact moment of assessment and possible control is discussed by the doctor during the visit.

Can the procedure be performed during the first consultation?

This is only possible if the qualification does not reveal any contraindications and the patient makes an informed decision.

First, facial expressions.
Then a decision.

Schedule a consultation and let's talk about a result you're happy with.
