01 / NEEDJaw tension and bruxism – where to start?
Teeth clenching and excessive activity of the masseter muscles can cause pain, muscle fatigue, tooth wear and a change in the contour of the lower part of the face. The most important thing is to recognize the cause.
A description of the appearance or sensation is a conversation starter, but is not a diagnosis or indication for a specific procedure. The decision is influenced by anatomy, health, previous treatments, tissue quality and the expected nature of the change.
What might attract attention?
- pain or fatigue in the masseter muscles
- morning jaw tension and headaches
- abrasion, cracks or hypersensitivity of teeth
- clearly marked masseter muscles
02 / ANALYSISWhat do we evaluate before choosing a method?
- bite, teeth and tissue condition
- tension and work of the masseter muscles
- symptoms of temporomandibular joints
- the place of the toxin in a broader management plan
Not every visible change requires surgery. Sometimes it is more appropriate to care, observe, consult another specialist or consciously refrain from the procedure.
03 / POSSIBILITIESWhat directions might be considered?
Dental diagnostics
Assessment of occlusion and possible effects of overload.
Botulinum toxin (Botox)
It may be one of the elements of the post-qualification procedure.
The final scope, preparation, number of stages and cost are determined individually after medical qualification.
04 / KNOWLEDGEBruxism, teeth clenching and botulinum toxin
Bruxism may involve clenching or grinding of teeth, muscle pain, morning jaw tension, headaches and tooth wear. A change in the appearance of the jaw is only one of the possible symptoms, so the consultation cannot be limited to an aesthetic assessment.
Botulinum toxin may be considered as part of the treatment to reduce excessive activity of the masseter muscles. However, it does not remove all causes of bruxism and does not replace dental diagnosis, dental protection or treatment of other coexisting problems.
05 / CONSULTATIONWhat does it look like to make a decision?
The conversation covers your goal, health status, medications, allergies, and previous procedures. Then Dr Małgorzata Osikowicz analyzes indications, contraindications, alternatives and possible limitations. The treatment does not have to take place on the same day.
